CAN YOU HEAR A SMILE?
by Sheryll Watt
Well, yeah. Bo's, my little doggie's, smile sounds like panting. That's because he will sit looking up at me and panting. He looks like he is smiling, and I believe he's smiling. So when I hear, "Pant, pant pant huff huff pant," I can bet he is smiling. I hear it now. There he is! Yeah, he is smiling!

That's proof that you can hear a smile. But can you hear a person smile? Well, they don't pant, and huff, but you can hear them smile if you listen.
If they tell you, "Hey, I'm smiling!" Then you know. But sometimes you don't have to hear those words to know that yeah, they are smiling. It's not what they say but HOW they say it. You might even hear a smile in how they say, "Hello!"
For instance, the woman who is the receptionist/assistant for my dentist always answers the phone with a smiling cheery, "Hello!" Sometimes it's "Good Morning!" or "Good afternoon!" Whatever the words, I can hear the smile. She could answer with "Go to heck!" and you would hear the smile and make your dental appointment with out batting an eye, or even noticing the words. All dentist need a person like this on staff. They would get and keep more patients.
Of course that sweet gal is not the only person I have heard smiling. Just the other day I had to call up an editor/co-writer I had only spoken to once. I heard him smile.
You see he is the one who started a column called "OIGC." It's a daily report on a popular soap opera. Different people cover each day of the week. He used to collect each day and put them together for the week.
I've been doing that and writing Friday's report since Dec. 2007. But a few weeks ago my internet connection was down; so I couldn't do it. His was the only phone number I had, so I called him to let him know I couldn't get that week's column in.
He answered the phone briskly with his name, "This is------" (I'm not giving out his name, He is a famous sports writer) After I explained who I was, his voice changed and he said, "Well, how you doing hon?' I could hear his smile. I've never even met him but I could still tell he was smiling. How neat is that?
Thanks for reading!!! Have you heard a smile recently?
