This is "Roy", my 1978 GMC Royale. Roy is named after my father because of the masculine walnut cabinetry, as well as from the name "Royale".
Welcome GMC Afficianados!
During my "GMC Quest" in the spring of 1998, I looked at 14 different GMC's. But when I saw a Royale model, I really fell in love! I found "Roy" for sale in Florida, and based on the photo's, I went south with every intention of coming home a GMC owner. My first trip in Roy (or in any motorhome, for that matter) was 900 miles home to Michigan. It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship! |
Original seats, dash, and even steering wheel. NOT the original 8-track radio. CD changer is mounted under the seat pedestal. Copilot bear made by Josie Bartz!
New Dometic 3-way fridge, 25 year old microwave, 6 feet of kitchen counter, AND a built in Margarita blender!
Mirrored bar cabinet just aft of the entrance door.
A view of the rear U-shaped couch. It has a removable table and makes up into a king size bed. Original upholstery not too bad, for now.
Reading nook, and the cedar lined clothes closet.
Looking forward from the bedroom, dry bath is on the left.
Seperate shower makes it a "dry bath". And yes, I can too fit in there! Useful storage for bulky items while travelling
A Fantastic fan. It is, well, fantastic. Note also the walnut cabinetry. We're not talking laminate, or even veneer. This stuff is solid walnut!
Located under the rear U-shape couch next to the "buzz box". Works off the engine compressor.
Front dinette, along with the table for the rear, would allow for a pretty big dinner party. But of course we usually just eat outside.
Everything I had heard about Alcoas seems to be true! Nice to have "round" wheels for a change.
Forward mounted LP tank in Royales allows for a handy "basement" storage area behind the original propane door.
Locating house battery in the engine compartment also adds a little storage in the Onan compartment. In a GMC, you need all the storage you can get.
Two paragons of automotive design, executed in fiberglass and aluminum.
Oh no wait, this is the Corvette. It seems to be somewhat faster than the GMC. But the GMC has more than 2 seats.
