THE 300 MILER AWARD

As one scout recently put it, "It's become more of a legend than an actual award."

But, finally, the 300 Miler patch has arrived! You may also know it as the coveted "Tri-fecta" award, but by whatever name you want to call it, it is now available and ready to be earned!

Anyone who has earned the patch in the last 15 years will be able to receive one free. Just send me an e-mail, and let me know where to send it. (Troop 375 alumni only)
Additional patches will be available for $5.00

Only about 30 total scouts and scouters have received the award thus far.

REQUIREMENTS:

OVERALL: The Scout or Scouter must complete a total of 300 miles during official troop events by a combination of backpacking, canoeing, and cycling. You must have mileage from EACH of the 3 modes of travel. They are broken down as follows:

SECTION #1.................BACKPACKING

The Scout or Scouter must complete at or about 50 continuous miles under his own power, with his gear and his share of the group's gear, while on an officially sanctioned Troop 375 backpacking event. This section must be completed in no less than 5 days and no more than 8 days. Food replenishment pickups are authorized. This section must be completed all at once...you cannot accumulate miles over several hikes. The scout must also earn the BSA 50 Miler award while completing this section, but may or may not complete Backpacking merit badge.

Years Completed: 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2008.......

SECTION #2................CANOEING

The Scout or Scouter must complete at or about 50 continuous miles as part of a canoe team during an officially sanctioned Troop 375 canoeing event. The canoe will carry it's own personal and group gear. This section can be completed in a 3-8 day period, and scouts do NOT have to earn the 50 Miler award while attempting this section, and may or may not earn the Canoeing merit badge. This section must be completed all at once.....accumulating mileage from several canoe trips is not allowed. Portages are allowed to avoid obstacles or to maintain trip excitement, but the break cannot be longer than a single overnight. The waterway can be a moving body of water (river, stream) or a standing body (lake). The scout must contribute at least 33% (1/3) of the total power of the craft, therefore, whitewater rafting would not be allowed to complete this section.

Years Completed: 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010........

SECTION #3..............CYCLING

The Scout of Scouter must complete at or about 200 continuous miles over a 4-7 day period during an officially sanctioned Troop 375 bike event. All personal and group gear is authorized to be carried by support vechicles. The scout must complete the entire trip under his own power. Any assisted transportation for the scout over a 10 mile distance will disqualify the scout for any reason. (mechanical failure, sickness). This section must be completed all at once....accumulating cycling mileage over several smaller trips is not authorized. The scout may or may not end up earning the Cycling merit badge while completing this section.

Years Completed: 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009.........

The sections may be completed in any order, in as little as 13 months, or over several years. Doing section multiple times cannot be substituted for any other section. All sections MUST be completed with TROOP 375. Past troop members are eligible to receive a patch, providing they completed all requirements while with the troop.

Note: The "300 Miler" is NOT an offcial BSA award, it is a troop award. The troop can make changes to the requirements as they see fit, with the approval of the Scoutmaster.
