THE WEEKLY HOWL

SEPTEMBER 30, 1999
Woof greetings to everyone! Today I'd like to tell you about the bull terrier puppy that my mistress got when she was very young. She was only around 13 at the time, I believe. She wanted a dog more than anything in the world, but her mother didn't know much about dogs and was hesitant to get one, fearing that she wouldn't be able to handle one. My mistress read Dog World magazines and wrote letters to the various breeders asking for information about puppies. She attended a few dog shows and looked over the various breeds. Then, who knows why, she fell in love with a bull terrier she saw at one of the dog shows. From then on, she had to have one. She even had a name all picked out for it. She wanted to call it Bruce. She used to draw cartoon pictures of her dog -to-be and write stories about him. Then finally the day came when her mother decided to let her buy a puppy. They travelled all the way up to Springfield, Massachusetts to visit a bull terrier breeder. My mistress picked out a beautiful white puppy with a black ear and a black spot near his tail. The puppy wasn't show quality, because, for some strange reason the spot near his tail disqualified him, making his coloration incorrect to the breed standard. So she got the puppy cheaper that way. She took him home, a long drive back in the car, and of course, named him Bruce. But there were numerous problems with this puppy. My mistress hadn't learned yet how to housebreak a puppy. So we had newspapers and puddles all over the house. Also, bull terriers, it seems, don't get along well with other pets. He was always trying to bite the cats the mistress had at that time. He played much too roughly with them. Finally, unable to train Bruce, my mistress had to return him to the breeder. It was a tearful moment for her. In later years, when she finally got her first dog, she took him to obedience school and learned how to properly housebreak and train a puppy. She learned that german shepherds were more trainable. So we had quite alot of shepherds living with us before I came along! Of course, us labs are trainable, too, and we make great and loving companions to live with, as my mistress has learned today! So now we have a lab here, too, me!!! So that's my story for this week. See you next time. Have a great weekend dog-lovers everywhere! Woof woof and barky bark!
Your Faithful Friend,
Brownie
