THE WEEKLY HOWL

SEPTEMBER 22, 1999

Woof! Hello and welcome once again to some more of my ramblings! Today I want to tell you about the day that Crystal gave birth to her first litter of puppies. It was an exciting event. Crystal was a white german shepherd (purebred and pedigreed), so, having been bred to Anton's Ian of Windy Way, another purebred german shepherd who wasn't white, she could have any number of different colored pups. There are actually several colors of shepherds: solid white, solid black, black and silver gray, black and tan, and sable. Crystal had a mixture of white puppies and black and tan puppies and a sable puppy. There were 10 in the litter, which was a really BIG litter for her to have; a mix of males and females in the colors I just mentioned above. Most were black and tan. The sable puppy was female and my mistress kept her. Her name was Abbey. The rest were sold to good homes. But the exciting part was the day the puppies were first born. We had waited all day, knowing that the time of birth was coming very close, when suddenly, Crystal went into labor. Sometimes, this is a very risky time. But most of the time, it's fine. This time was fine. Birth occurred with no complications and all the puppies were born healthy. It took alot of hours for all 10 pups to arrive. As each one came, my mistress wiped them dry with a towel and gave them back to Crystal to take care of. After they all were born, Crystal looked very happy and contented. She was a good mother and loved her puppies dearly. She took very good care of them. You could almost see a smile on her face as she nursed them! Later, when they were weaned, they began to eat solid food. We had puppies running all over the house and getting food all over themselves and the floor. Puppies like to put their feet into their dishes, I can tell you! They wear as much food as they eat! But they were very cute. When they were 8 weeks of age, our mistress sold them all except for Abbey (an event that upset Crystal terribly; she really missed those pups). They grew up to be very beautiful dogs, too. This is not only based on what Abbey grew up to be, but also, based on the fact that one of the buyers brought their dog back to visit us one day a year later. The dog was gorgeous! We were all so proud and happy about that! Well, that's the story of Crystal's litter! See you next time! Woof! Woof!
Your Faithful Friend,
Brownie
