THE WEEKLY HOWL

AUGUST 28, 1999

Bow wow wow woof woof! That means hello in doggy talk! Welcome back to my Dog House! I want to tell you about the dog shows that Ian used to attend in the American Kennel Club. It was way back a long time ago, back in the 1980's. Ian used to appear in the dog show ring to try to win ribbons and trophies. He went to the show, along with his then brothers and sisters: Lucky, Dixie, Pokey, and Ellie, who were all purebred german shepherds like himself. There was also a white shepherd named Crystal, but for some reason, white shepherds are disqualified from the show ring, or at least, they were at that time anyway. Something to do with white being a recessive gene and therefore, not allowed. So Ian went to the dog show with everyone except Crystal. All the dogs were piled into the car and driven to the dog show. At the show, they waited in doggie crates, with plenty of breathing air and light in them, till their names were called. Then they went into the show ring one at a time, depending on which class was called. Ian was entered in adult males, while Dixie was in puppy females ages 3 to 6 months, and Pokey was in puppy males 6 to 9 months. Lucky was in puppy males 3 to 6 months. Ellie was in adult females. Ian won blue ribbons and even a few trophies. Dixie and Pokey won some, too. They came home with a silver plate, a crystal ice bucket and ice tongs, and a silver mug with a mirrored bottom. Ellie didn't win anything, though. Those trophies are still on display at my house today. I know about it because Newman has told me stories about the days when the show dogs lived with us. They had alot of fun at the shows and met lots of dogs and people there. (I don't go to the dog shows, as I'm just a pet, so I have to be content to hear the stories.) Wolf, a shepherd mix male who lived at our house in those days, used to enter obedience trials for pet dogs. He won a certificate doing that. Ian also fathered some litters of puppies with Dixie and Crystal. They were all sold to good homes, except for one my mistress kept named Abbey. Abbey was later bred when she grew up and my mistress kept a puppy from her litter named Fanta, short for Fantasy. It was so funny because just before Ian died, my mistress had 3 pets that people believed were named after soft drinks: Pepsi, Fanta, and Tang (the cat)! Of course, only Pepsi was named for the drink (although not really, it just sounded like a cute name for a cute dog). Fanta was really Fantasy and Tang is named by coincidence. His name sounded oriental to my mistress. She didn't stop to think about the breakfast drink of the same name! My name is food, but I was actually really named because of my brown color. But I like food so I like being associated with brownies, YUMMMM! That's all for this time. See you again soon. Thanks for dropping by to see us! Woof! Which means, bye bye for now!
Your Friend, Brownie
