Lighthouse Group
1.Lighthouses are an important part of our history. Without them, this country would not have been able to achieve its greatness through commerce. Lighthouses come in all sizes, colors and shapes. They have been set on fire, attacked by Indians, set on fire and blown up and are rapidly been destroyed by the forces of nature. Most Lighthouses today are run by the Coast Guard and are automated.
2.Our Group was formed to help Lighthouses in need. We collect donationsfrom our 50/50 raffle, membership fees and various other activities. To date we have donated over $4000.00 to deterating Lighthouses that are in danger of extinction. We have former Lighthouse keepers among our members and have had Lighthouse authors among our Guest Speakers.
New members are always welcome to our meetings. Their is a $5.00 per person yearly membership fee. Join us for a few laughs and some interesting information.
At our regular meetings members discuss their experiences with Lighthouses. We have Lighthouse Trivia and Guest Speakers and a lot of laughs.
On January 9th 2006 we featured "Lightships" and the "Fresnel Lens". Lightships were called the early Lanterns of the Sea a combination of a lighthouse, ship, lightkeeper and sailor and did service where no lighthouse could be built. The Fresnel Lens also played an important in our History. Without it many ships would be lost and our commerce would have been severly hurt.
In February 2 members showed us how to build a Lighthouse out of match sticks. We also show avideo on Hunting Island in South Carolina.
Our March meeting we had Lighthouse author Bonnie Rourke tell us all about Canadian Lighthouses in the Lake Huron Area.
Our April meeting will be Lighthouses the San Francisco Bay including Alcatraz.
In the coming months we will cover Alaska, Pennsylvania and Illonois.
