MSNTV 2

Now that the MSNTV2 is out we have opened the new MSNTV2 group. Much more information is located there than I could fit on this page, with questions and answers by people from MSN and people who currently are using the new box.

I will be leaving this page up as a basic reference but will no longer be updating it. Everyone is welcome at the new group so feel free to join us and find out all about the new MSNTV2.

Below is a list of questions I have been asked and attempted to find the answers to. The information contained within this page was gathered from the media and other reliable resources. In some areas the information was not available (N/A) at this time or I was not able to confirm it through other sources.

If you have questions, please feel free to mail them to me at my igo2xs webtv address and I will attempt to find an answer.

When will the new box be available?

The new box will be available on October 5th.

What does the unit look like?

Front of Unit

Back of Unit

Box

BoxContents
(Keyboard is included but is not shown in picture)

EMAIL:

Will our new addies be msntv.net or msntv.com or what will they be?

Addresses on the new box will be @msn.com but you will be able to add a  user that is a pre-existing @webtv.net or @hotmail.com address. At registration you could register with an existing hotmail or webtv name.

Can we keep our WebTV e-mail addresses if we want to keep them?
Yes.

How many users/email addresses will we have on the new box?

You can have up to 11 users. You have your main user and 10 secondary users. Email has 2GB for the main user and 250MB for secondary users.

If I got TNB but was keeping my new Plus and its account, can I add some of my webtv users and the hotmail addy I have as a user on this box, to the new box AND still have them and use them also from this new Plus?
I am aware that I will have to have TNB as another account.... Or at least as a 2nd box on the same account and pay another monthly dial-up fee.

You can have the same address on your current box and the new box at the same time, but you will have two bills.

Will there be anything on the msntv2 system that would allow opening common attachments such as MS Word?

Yes, we will be able to read word attachments, open pdf files and WMV files in email.

The Plus units can check twice every 24 hours for mail. Will it still check twice a day or only once a day like the current Classics?

When you sign in to a user it will check for mail for that user.

Can the Junk Mail Filters be set up by users?

Junk Mail filters will be set by MsnTV for @webtv.net addresses. Hotmail and MSN addresses will be able to set up their own Junk Mail Filter like at hotmail.

Can we Block individual e-mail addresses?

For those who use MSN and Hotmail addresses, yes. For those that use @webtv addresses, no.

Will there be a limit of how many can be blocked like the 150 we have in the approved senders or will there be more?

Those using a @msn.com and @hotmail.com will be limited to blocking up to 450. At this time, @webtv.net users will not be able to block email addresses.

Will there be Custom folders titled by users like Hotmail to sort mail?? [instead of saved, sent, and discard]

You will have the same functionality as at Hotmail. However, addresses that are on both units will only have the folders on the new box and not on the old box.

With the latest Hotmail deal will adding @hotmail and @msn addresses be worth while or will TNB also be saddled with all the can't do's like WebTv is??

This is a totally different client then the webtv and it was built with the hotmail email client in mind so there will not be the issues on the new box that we have on the webtv. Hotmail and MSN addies on the new box are paid accounts.

[NOTE] As you will notice in many of the answers, @webtv.net addresses will be handled in a different manner than the @msn.com and @hotmail.com addresses.[/NOTE]

Can we transfer our current address book?

Yes, if you are going to add an existing user to the new box. It will also move your IM buddy list.

Will it have a Sigbox?

Not as we now know it. We will be able to have a "sig" but it will be as an attachment similar to what a hotmail user does.

Will we be able to do vidcaps?

No

Will we be able to use a mic?

No

Will it have Cut and Paste as we know it?

There is no cmd key but there is a ctrl key which will allow you to ctrl+c to copy and ctrl+v to paste. The ctrl+a does not appear to work at this time. As I understand it you can use the "find" which will highlight a specific word and then use the arrow and shift key to highlight further text for copying. This only works in a "text box area", such as an email you are writing.

Will we be able to do audioscopes?

No.

I wanted to know if we could still view gradtables on the new box?

No

Will it quote and smallify automatically? Or will it need to be done by hand like on WebTv?

No

Will we have Instant Messenger?

Yes, and it will have a limited set of emoticons we can use.

DISCUSS:

Will it have our current Alt Discuss newsgroups and clubs?

No. In order to use groups you will need to enter through google into usenet or use a group such as MSN etc..

Pagebuilder and Scrapbook and Favorites:

Will it have Pagebuilder?

No

What will the homepage look like?

Homepage

Will it have something to take pagebuilders place for users to make homepages with?

Not at this time.

Will it still have a scrapbook or something similar we can store files in?

There is a storage area but is not "scrapbook" like we are used to. It is called photos and will hold up to 100 pictures (no limit to storage size but it will alter the image if it is a very large one).

Would we be able to link to files in our storage area?

No. You will be able to go to a site that allows you to "upload and browse" your photos like a pc user does and select one of the photos to upload to a site. This is referred to as a "virtual directory".

Will it be possible to have two (or more) windows open and active at the same time. ?

No

Does PB & scrapbook get transferred with your account info if you already have a LBB and do a box swap?

There will be no pagebuilder available and I am not positive at this time whether the images in our scrapbook could be transferred to the photos section, it does not look promising. The best suggestion would be to get a free account and transfer the images to it just to be safe.

Will we have favorite folders and if so will it be the same amount we currently have?

You can have up to 225k so the limit on how many folders will be relevant to how much you have stored in each folder.

Are there favs and save keys and do they work the same way as on our current keyboard?

There are 3 Fkeys and there is a Favs key and save key. You can save a favorite and set fkeys just like we currently do. When on a site, you can press an Fkey and save that site as that Fkey.

Will FAVS get transferred or are they only stored on our current boxes?

It appears they will Not be transferred. It is a suggestion that you email the various sites to yourself or make a page to store them at till you are set up on the new box.

CONNECTING DSL/BROADBAND/DIAL UP:

What will the Monthly Fee be?

21.95 for regular dialup.

9.95 for open ISP

Any alternative connection would be 9.95 plus your payment to whatever company you chose to go with. MSN does not supply Broadband.

Will there be a price break for the existing users of webtv? If so, how much?

The current webtv users will be sent out to us starting on the 5th of October in email. There will be a 25 $ rebate for current webtv users and also two months of free service to those who set up a new account on the new box.

Will it have a 10 minute shut down like WebTv?

It would be according to what you use to connect. With dial up it will disconnect, with broadband it would not.

Will it have a utilities page to display the same info that WebTv does?

No

Will we be able to clear our cookies?

You will be able to clear your cookies like we currently do, all at once. Not individually.

Will it display the number being dialed when logging on like WebTv does??

Yes

What about call waiting?

Yes, it will have the call waiting feature.

Will TNB be behind a firewall like WebTv?

No

About SSL;
Will TNB be released with more SSL certificates than what WebTv now has??

It is likely they will be the same.
Current SSL certificates on our current webtv units.

If not behind a firewall how will worms, spyware, trojans, and viruses be dealt with?

It will have the same filters that our current hotmail accounts have that will scan for virus etc ..

I'm wondering about the junk PC's pick up surfing the web (I think they can, anyway). Would a TNB _not_ networked through a PC be susceptible to spyware, etc., and have no way to deal with it? And if a virus should sneak through the mail filters what would happen to TNB?

TNB is closed off in a way that things can't be "just added" off the internet like the pc does. It can't just pick up spyware and virus'.

Or with DSL or Cable Broadband will the user have to buy a hardware firewall?

You will not have to but it is suggested that you do. Some companies actually come with a built in firewall.

Will it have Audible dialing options like our current units?

Yes

Will WE be able to change dial up numbers ourselves?

Yes

How about a "one plan" for both the TNB and a computer?

No

Will there be a package deal to run _both_ TNB and our current WebTv's? Kinda' like the One Plan but _Without_ needing a Computer?

No, not at this time

What about broadband? The Amazon site says a computer is needed to access that part of the system. People without computers may not be able to use half of the new box service if true.

Some broadband suppliers will actually bring a computer with them to initiate the connection. After this is done you can connect your new MSNTV 2. If the supplier does not bring a pc with them when initiating the connection, you will need to have one in the home in order to set it up.

Will it do a Box Switch like we can do now with our current units?

You will be able to do a box switch from an msntv2 to an msntv2 but not from our current webtvs to the new msntv2. You will be able to add users from your current box to the new msntv2 box. (There will be a new number to call, it will not be the same as our current WebTVs dial.)

Printers/Keyboards/Scanners/Cams:

Will TNB support the complete printer options? If the WebTv printer driver allowed us to use that option in the printer you could turn the print 90 degrees to what it is now [called landscape print] and be able to use the _printer_ for what we now need a _website_ to do.

N/A

Is there an Official list of compatible printers?

You can find a list of compatible printers HERE.

Laser Printers?

Yes. Some of the printers on this list are laser printers. When given the time I will try to seperate them from the other printers.

Will the printer driver for TNB be in California like it is now for the WebTv system? Or will it be installed IN the unit by MSN TV so the wait time to search for the driver EACH time you print is eliminated?

The driver will come from the MsnTV2 servers but once on the box it will stay there, just like when you add driver to your pc.

Will it really be white with a white keyboard and white remote?

Yes, it is a mixture of grey and white, with some added blue color. If you don't like the colors try this

http://igo2xs.us/tutorials/customize.html

Remote Control

Can we use the wired keyboards we use now or do we _need_ to get new USB keyboards?

The new unit comes with a keyboard  for you to use. The old and new keyboards do not function the same.

Keyboard

Close Up of Keyboard

Will _real_ scanners work with the new box?

No

Combo units? [printer/scanner/fax]

No

And will it have a WEB-EYE?

No

Will the new box have a mouse?

The new box Does Not come with a mouse but you can use a Microsoft optical USB mouse.

Will a external hard drive work with the new msntv2 unit.

Some will work and some will not. Some may work one day and not the next. There are many things that are usb and can plug into the back of the new unit. Lots of it is not "officially" supported. You can try whatever you want to and some of it will work but the only "official" storage device is the Card Reader. So I wouldn't run out just yet and buy one unless you have extra cash lying around.

Will it be able to have a VCR, camcorder or digital camera connected?

No you will not be able to connect a camcorder, VCR or digital camera directly to the new box. You will be able purchase a card reader and download the files from a digital camera onto it.

Sound:

Will TNB have built in background music to surf to?

No

Can anybody tell yet whether the MSNTV2 version of the Windows Media Player (v 9/10) will be able to handle any audio formats besides .wma?

It can play wavs and MP3s but at this time it appears not to be able to play rams and midis. Some radio stations work that do not with our current boxes.

If TNB can open more than one browser window at a time there could be background music from many sources running in the background while you're writing an email in another window. could that be done?

Yes

Browser etc.

How will TNB handle websites that use a browser sniffer to keep out all but the latest and greatest browser?

The new box will appear as a pc running windows XP so will not be kept out.

If TNB is tantamount to a Classic, will there be a TNB Plus in the future?

At this time there are no definite plans for another unit.

Will TNB use proxy Servers like WebTv does assuming it will be some sort of thin client system?

No

Assuming that the new box will be at least a semi-thin client will there be sufficient space/memory to upgrade or replace things like the browser?

Yes

Will there be access to telnet, ftp etc or will we still need something like transloaders/uploaders to move files & graphics ?

Transloader/uploader's.

Using some computers you can decide to accept a security certificate that isn't on your system just by clicking OK. Will this sort of capability be available or will we have only those certificates selected by msntv2 ?

MSN will do the security certificates.

How will it work with Secure Sites?
For example if a site changes it's secure certificate that would lock out a current unit what could a person with a new box do? Wait for an upgrade or can we change something on the users end?

MSN TV will do it.

Will the new box be able to use java?

No

Will the new box have a word processor?

No it will not. At this time you would need to go to an outside source like the current webtv units do.

TV

Will there be PIP?

No

Will there be a TV listings?

Under MSN entertainment  you will find the listings.

What other TV functions will we have or will we lose?

There will be no tv functions.

CHAT

Will we still be able to use IRC or will we be able to download MIRC etc..?

You will be able to use MSN chat and some servers that are php based.

Will there be a direct link to chat on the home area?

Yes

Will we still have a guest in front of our nick?

No, there will be no "guest" in front of the nicks at MSN Chat.
