FALL / WINTER 2009

"PLACE OTHERS FIRST"

Place others first and you'll bring a smile to their heart. Express how you care by creating a placemat and/or card to donate to an organization, program, or agency that provides meals to people who are disabled, elderly, or homeless. These may include Meals On Wheels, senior nutrition centers, soup kitchens, care facilities and retirement homes.

Draw a picture on each placemat and/or card about people and things you are thankful for. Write the sentence, "I am grateful for you because you make the world a happier place with your smile!" Be sure to sign it from yourself using your "first" name, your age or grade, name of your participating school or group, and "The PALS Foundation ARK Angels Circle Of Kindness Project"

"Place Others First" outreach event aids in building self-esteem and competence in young people as their helping habits are recognized and displayed.

BENEFITS * * * *
**Youth build their sense of competence and self-esteem as they recognize how they help others.
**Youth increase their regard for human diversity by realizing how people care for each other.
**Youth communicate how their hands are helping hands by drawing pictures and/or writing words.

INSTRUCTIONS * * * *
**Discuss these questions: What does the word kindness mean to you? What does it mean to be helpful? Can you think of ways the words kindness and helpful are similar in their meaning? What are ways you can express kindness and be helpful to each other in school? Your family? Your friends? Those who live in your neighborhood and community?

**Have youth draw pictures and write words on placemats and cards to describe how they can express kindness and be helpful to others. Adults or more advanced students can write words for younger children or those with disabilities. Next, on the placemat or inside the card, write the sentence, "I am grateful for you because you make the world a happier place with your smile." Have each youth write their first name only, age or grade, and their school or club/group on the placemat or card. Donate these beautiful cards and/or placemats to an organization, program or agency which provides meals to people who are disabled, elderly or homeless in your community. You may also contact the PALS Foundation at (805)544-0984 to have them delivered for you.
