Make This Pompadour Pillow For Weddings, Birthdays, Christmas and All Occasions

Pillows can be different just by varying the color of pillow form and the placement and color of the yarn.

Since April, I have been making these beautiful crocheted pillows for birthdays, weddings and Christmas and some I have even sold. It takes about 10 hours, depending on how devoted you are to getting the pillow done. By using various colors in areas where the different parts meet, you can creat a variety of pillow designs. My wife makes the pillows forms and flowers while I stuff the pillows and crochet the pillow cover.

MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Jamie Pompadour or Caron Cuddlesoft Pompadour or Red Heart Baby Soft Pompadour.

Size D Crochet hook.

2 pieces of costume satin 17" square.

Polyester fiberfill

Ribbons and silk flowers.

Use 3 skeins of yarn when making the pillow all one color. Use 4 or more skeins when making the pillow two or more colors depending on color choice. One 1.75 oz skein may or may not complete one side. A 1.5 oz skein will require two skeins (one and a little more of another) for each side. Three skeins will do both sides if using a 1.5 oz skein but another skein may be needed for the outside lace.

STITCH GUIDE:

SHELL: (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in st or sp indicated
FLAIR: (ch 1, dc) 4 more times in same st indicated.

PILLOW SIDES:

Ch-74 (Note: you man need 77 or 78 as there are some chains that may hide under the first row flair.)

ROW 1: Sc in second ch from hook. * ch-3, skip next 5 chs, dc in next st, flair in same st, ch-3, skip next 5 chs. sc in next ch; repeat from * across.

ROW 2: Ch-3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout) turn, 2 dc in same st, * @ ch-1, skip next ch-3 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp (ch-3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 more times, ch 1, skip next ch-3 sp, @, work Shell in next sc; repeat from * 4 more times then repeat from @ to @ once, 3 dc in last sc.

ROW 3: Ch-3, turn, 2 dc in same st, *@ ch-2, skip next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp, (ch-3, sc in next ch-3 sp) two more times, ch-2 @, skip next ch-1 sp, work Shell in next Shell (ch-1 sp); repeat from * 4 more times, then repeat from @ to @ once, skip next ch-1 sp and next 2 dc, 3 dc in last dc.

ROW 4: Ch-3, turn; 2 dc in same st, * @ ch-3, skip next ch-2 sp, (sc in next ch-3 sp, ch-3) two times @ skip next ch 2-sp, work Shell in next Shell; repeat from * 4 more times, then repeat from @ to @ once, skip next ch-2 sp and next 2 dc, 3 dc in last dc.

ROW 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in first dc, * @ ch-3, skip next ch 3-sp, dc in next ch-3 sp, work Flair in same ch-3 sp, ch-3 @, skip next ch-3 sp, sc in next Shell; repeat from * 4 more times, then repeat from @ to @ once, skip next ch-3 sp and next 2 dc, sc in last dc.

Repeat rows 2 - 5 for pattern until piece is square or about 10 patterns. (Rows 2 - 5 consists of 1 pattern). Do not split pattern when measuring for squareness, end pattern with row 5.

Make two.

EDGING:

Put 2 sc in corner st, work 77 sc down each side and bottom ending with 3 sc in coner st for a total of 80 sc on each side. Work 77 sc across the top ending with 1 sc in beginning sc st, join with sl st.

JOINING BACK TO FRONT:

Joining is done by sc both front and back edging together working 3 sc in each corner st. (Note: 82 sc on each side, but this isn't real important here as long as the sides come out even and the corners meet. They can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing sts so that the corners meet). When 4th side is 1/3 to 1/2 way joined together, stuff pillow into cover and continue to join back to front.

BORDER:

DOUBLE CROCHET ROW Ch-3 in corner st, dc in same st, dc in each sc across until corner. 3 dc in corner st. 84 dc on each side. Continue around until dc meets making sure 3 dc is placed in each corner. (Note: Do not count the ch-3 and first dc sts on the first side count. Include these on the fourth side count so that there is one final dc in the same st where you begin). Join with a sl st. (Note: There should be 336 dc now or 84 dc per side which includes all corners and the ch-3 beginning).

BORDER PATTERN:

RND 1: Working from corner dc, sc in corner st, *ch-3, skip next 5 dc, dc in next dc sp, work Flair in same sp, skip next 5 dc, sc in next dc*; Repeat from * 28 times until you reach the beginning, join with sl st to begin sc. (Note: You should have a sc in each corner dc.)

RND 2: Ch-3, (dc, ch-1, 2 dc) in same st, @ # ch-2, skip next ch-3 sp, *sc in next ch-1 sp, (ch-3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 more times, ch-1, skip next ch-3 sp, work Shell in next sc, ch-1, skip next ch-3 sp,* repeat from * 5 times, sc in next ch-1 sp, (ch-3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 3 more times, ch-2, skip next ch-3 sp #, work Shell in next sc@. Repeat from @ to @ two more times (two more sides); repeat from # to # 4th side, join with sl st, sl st in next dc and in next ch-1 sp.

RND 3: Ch-3, (dc, ch-1, 2 dc) in same sp,@ # ch-4, skip next ch-2 sp, *sc in next ch-3 sp, (ch-3, sc in next ch-3 sp) two more times, skip next ch-1 sp, work Shell in next Shell, ch-2, skip next ch-1 sp,* sc in next ch-3 sp, (ch-3, sc in next ch-3 sp) two more times, ch-4, skip next ch-2 sp #, work Shell in Shell @; repeat from * 5 times. Repeat from @ to @ two more times; repeat from # to # on 4h side, join with sl st, sl st in next dc and next ch-1 sp.

RND 4: Ch-3, (dc, ch-1, 2 dc) in same sp, @ # ch-6, skip next ch-4 sp, *(sc in next ch-3 sp, ch-3) two times, ship next ch-2 sp, work Shell in next Shell, ch-3, skip next ch-2 sp*, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch-3, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch-6 skip next ch-4 sp#, work Shell in next Shell@; repeat from * 5 times. Repeat from @ to @ two times; repeat from # to # on 4th side, join with sl st to first dc, sl st in next dc and next ch-1 sp.

RND 5: Ch-8, skip next ch 6 sp, @ # *dc in next ch-3 sp, work Flair in same ch-3 sp, ch-3, sc in next Shell, ch-3, skip next ch-3 sp*, dc in next ch-3 sp, work Flair in same ch-3 sp, ch-8, skip next ch-6 sp, sc in next Shell #, ch-8@, repeat from * 5 times. Repeat from @ to @ two more times. Repeat from # to # on 4th side. Finish off by hidind all loose threads.

PILLOW:

With fabric right sides facing, sew together 2 pieces of 17" square costume satin or other satin finish, machine washable material using 1/4" seam allowance leaving a 3" opening to stuff, turn inside out and stuff tight with poly fil. Sew opening closed with needle & thread.
Decorate with flower arrangements of your choice.

Note: By using different colors of yarn for various parts of the pillow, different unique pillows can be created, I have used two and three color schemes for the Double Crochet edging by crocheting one in while using the other. Color change is made by pulling the new color through the last two loops of the dc st. The current unused color is crocheted into the work and dragging it until it is used again. When using multiple colors here, be sure your repeat pattern repeats every 12 dc. An alternating blue, white (2) an alternating red, white and blue (3) will work. An alternating 6 sts red, 6 sts white and 6 sts blue will not work (18), likewise 3 sts of each (9) will not work. Sometimes I make the dc row a different color (to match pillow material) and finish off the last row of border in that same color. Other variations I've done is made the edgine and joining rows different colors too. You can even make the back and front different colors and make the trim in corresponding colors so you have a versatile, decorative pillow.
