THE GRAB BAG (San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner )

(This is a column that I thought I would share with you. It is a favorite of mine from the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner called the "GRAB BAG" ( ~ L. M. Boyd~...)

ITEM 6388C in our Love and War Man's file has to be credited to Anonymous: "A woman marries hoping he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries hoping she won't change, but she does.

A ton a day, that's how much humpback whales eat.

A FROZEN ant covered with ice crystals is not necessarily a dead ant. Many spend the winter in that brittle condition, then shake it off in the spring.

IT was President William Howard Taft who in 1910 reported that cocaine posed America's all-time most serious drug problem.

BRAZIL has black beaches, and pink and gold, and white. About 4,000 of them. Why we see so little about them I don't know. Understand they're magnificent.

CERTAIN sailors a century ago believed you couldn't drown if you had a tattoo of a pig on one foot and of a rooster on the other.

LISTED IN MY computer's notebook is a British ballerina named Mary Hale who for years wore T shirts mongrammed. Hale, Mary -- Full of Grace.

BULGARIA once was Thrace. Romania was Dacia.

JUST about everybody thinks of Halley as the fellow who discovered the comet. Hardly anybody thinks of him as the one who devised the actuarial tables on which insurance companies base the costs of their premiums.

THAT TENDENCY to lose things may be inherited. Or so contends at least one medical specialist. Computer runs reportedly suggest the curious proclivity runs in families. A real born loser? Come on....

OBSERVED the sage Patricia Strange: "If you don't have somebody in your life, you don't have a life.

OLD Persian proverb:"Fortunate parents who have fine children usually have fortunate children who have fine parents."

IF a woman attempts to commit suicide before age 35,most likely she'll fail. But if she tries it after age 50, most likely she'll succeed.

AT least your brain will lose weight as you age.

TAKE your turn at analyzing the claim that many people gain and lose weight in accordance with the cycles of the moon... Anything to it?

HUMANS aren't the only animals that sneeze, just the only ones that sneeze with their mouths open.

AMONG all the affectionate nick-names husbands call their wives. No 1 is "Honey," according to those studious list makers who pick up what name-droppers leave behind.

WAS none other than that pioneer medicine man Hippocrates who first put into the record that fat people don't tend to live as long as thin people.

A SPIDER can't focus its eyes. If what it sees isn't exactly in range, it has to move closer or farther to get a better look.

SOUND of running water makes beavers nervous. They want to dam it evidently. Farm beavers start projects around drain pipes, leaking field faucets, old culverts.

WHAT you and I call a "ladybug" is known in Iraq as the "water delivery man's daughter".

"TOTAL liberty is total solitude," wrote the sage Madame Dariaux.

"THE moment you become attached to another human being, animal or even to an object, you lose a little of your liberty."

A praying mantis will attack any small animal life except an ant.

IF you are going to own a camel, feed it or it'll eat your tent. Camels do that.

(well, I hope you enjoyed that, I always feel just a little smarter after reading The Grab Bag...INQUIRING MINDS ALWAYS WANT TO KNOW :) )
